Do pre-season results tell you anything useful?

Fitness and experimentation matter more than scorelines, but supporters still react.
How much should we read into pre-season, and what actually signals a team is ready?

Scorelines in July and August are mostly noise, but the underlying physical metrics and defensive compactness tell a real story. When evaluating readiness, I tend to look at how quickly a side transitions from their defensive block into an organized press after losing possession, rather than the goals scored or conceded. If the distance between the midfield and forward lines remains compact under fatigue, that usually signals the tactical automatisms are sticking. Teams might be running at seventy percent intensity, but the systemic triggers for the press usually show up if the coaching staff has drilled them properly. Do you think managers care more about positional discipline in those friendlies, or just getting ninety minutes into the legs?
